A remarkably versatile material derived from trees, is a renewable and eco-friendly choice for crafting essential baking tools like bannetons.
Our journey began in 1847, and with a commitment to sustainability, we’ve embraced the exceptional qualities of wood pulp for our handcrafted bannetons.
Bread baskets (proofing baskets) have been essential tools for bakers for almost two centuries. Our company’s story began over 150 years ago, initially crafting molds from straw and later transitioning to rattan. However, recognizing the ecological concerns associated with rattan, we’ve proudly used wood pulp since 1920.
Our raw material is a pure, natural product derived from fresh spruce wood. It’s made without chemical additives, relying solely on physical processes. Fresh tree trunks from sustainable forests are pressed onto rotating stone rollers with water, breaking down the wood structure.
This creates a fibrous material containing cellulose molecules and natural wood components like lignin, which may cause a slight yellow-brown discoloration – a testament to the unaltered state of the wood pulp.
Our favorite material is produced by transforming trees into a soft, fibrous material. Different methods, such as mechanical and chemical pulping, exist.
We focus on wood pulp sourced from sustainably managed forests, ensuring the renewability of this valuable resource.
We meticulously source our raw material from companies dedicated to sustainable practices. At every stage of production, we strive to minimize our environmental footprint.
This material versatility extends far beyond baking tools. It’s a crucial ingredient in paper, textiles, packaging, and countless other everyday items.
Responsibly managed forests ensure this material remains a sustainable choice for bakers.
Our wood pulp process is purely physical, minimizing environmental impact.
The natural origins mean it’s biodegradable, hence ecological.
Our bannetons, rooted in history yet forward-looking in their environmental ethos, represent the perfect blend of tradition and innovation.
For professional and home bakers, they offer not just a tool for crafting exquisite bread but also a statement of support for sustainable practices.
Join us in embracing a greener future, one loaf at a time, with our hand-made bannetons that turn baking into an act of environmental stewardship.
Wood pulp’s inherent ability to absorb and release moisture is crucial for dough development, helping it maintain its shape and rise beautifully.
Its porous nature provides an ideal environment for natural fermentation, enhancing the flavor profile of your bread.
Wood pulp bannetons offer remarkable strength and longevity, serving bakers reliably for years to come.
There’s an undeniable rustic charm to our bannetons, adding a touch of traditional craftsmanship to your baking.

For nearly two centuries, the bread banneton (proofing basket) have been a baker’s trusted tool. Our company, Crust&Craft, began this journey in 1847, initially crafting molds from natural materials like straw.
Later, rattan became popular, but its ecological impact raised concerns. In 1920, we made a decisive shift toward sustainability by embracing wood pulp.
